A Congestion Alleviation Technique Exploiting Structural Insights on the Interaction of Line Loading Limits, Reactance and Line Outage Security Constraints

Line outage security constraints ensure that a proposed generating schedule will not load any line to the point where its removal causes more overloading elsewhere. These increase operating costs by occasionally precluding usage of cheapest generation sources. That is, power networks frequently suffer congestion in this ($N-1$) sense. To explore structural origins such congestion, paper defines new metric for branches within grid, shadow capacity, which gauges maximum flow on branch before would tend overload other lines Using novel metric, we argue congestion is consequence imbalances pattern reactances and capacities across network. further insights offered shadow capacity analysis, methodology relieve hence improve grid's loadability developed.
